Sophomores Mallory Ziegler and Phil Derick were honored at the 14th Annual Red Barons Golf Classic at Corning Country Club as they were named the Female and Male academic student-athlete's of the year for the Corning Community College Red Barons.
MalloryZiegler from ElmiraHS, was a two-year starter for the women's soccer team, and she enjoyed personal and team success in both seasons at Corning CC. She was named an NJCAA Academic All-American her freshman year and her sophomore year was named to the Mid-State all-conference team. Also, this past year the Red Baron women's soccer team won the Mid-State Athletic Conference for the first time ever, going undefeated in conference play, while setting the record for most wins in a season with 12, goals scored in a season with 77, and goals allowed in a season with 14. Mallory started every game for the Red Barons on defense this season and had two assists on the year. Women's Soccer Coach Kyle Leach had this to say about her… " Mallory had an outstanding season and was the glue that held the Red Barons defense together. She was a general in the back line and was a key part of the team's success this season." Mallory was a Presidential Scholar, graduating Cum Laude last weekend with a 3.74 GPA and a degree in Humanities & Social Science. She will be attending Binghamton University and will pursue a profession in law.
Phil Derick, from Prattsburgh Central High School, was a two-year starter in centerfield for the Red Barons baseball team. This past season, Phil broke two stolen base records, one record for most in a single season with 22 and he is now the career leader in stolen bases with 34 total. This year he hit .301, with 27 runs scored, 28 hits with 4 doubles, 4 triples, a homerun. Most impressive, was the range Phil displayed while playing centerfield. He robbed numerous opposing hitters with diving and sliding catches, however, his ability to run down balls in the gap that others couldn't come close to is what separates him from everyone else. Phil is a Mechanical Technology: CAD Design major who graduated last week with a 3.0 GPA and he will be attending Wheeling Jesuit University on athletic scholarship to play D2 baseball for the Cardinals.
