The Red Barons travelled to Onondaga CC last Tuesday afternoon for a doubleheader that would end up deciding the MSAC Conference Championship. Corning played 14 innings of solid softball and sweep the Lazers on their homne turf by scores of 9-4 and 9-7 to win the MSAC Conference title.
In game one, the Red Barons jumped out in the top of the first inning scoring 4 runs courtesy of a Sam Hauck double, Michele DiNicola triple, Skylar Rechner single and Rachael Bonning single. The top of the second was much of the same as Corning scored 3 runs as DiNicola hit a three-run blast over the leftfield fence. OCC scored once in the 1st and three runs in the 3rd but that is all they could manage off of starter Skylar Rechner. Rechner scattered 10 hits over the game and was in control innings 4-7. Dinicola went 3 for 4 with a HR and 4 RBI's, Hauck was 2 for 3 and Danielle Dille 3 for 5.
The tables were turned in the nightcap as it was OCC that jumped out early, scoring three runs in the top of the 1st and adding 2 more in the 3rd to go up 5-0. The Red Barons bats responded with 3 runs in the 3rd and then followed with a huge 4th inning to plate 5 runs and take the lead for good. In the 4th, singles by Hauck, DiNicola, Yvonne Hartridge, Ciera Sprague and Bonning gave Laura Tryon the baserunners she needed to blast a triple opposite field and pull away. Corning added a big insurance run in the bottom of the 6th with a Leigha Jones RBI. OCC scored one in the 5th and then hit a solo HR in the top of the 7th but that was as close as they would get. Starter Rhilea Chabot allowed 9 hits with no walks and earned the win.
This was the Red Barons fifth MSAC Championship title in the past six years.
