Women's Basketball Plays Tough, Splits Weekend Games

The Red Barons women's basketball team took on Schenectady CCC in their first game of a weekend double header on December 9th. Through 20 minutes of play, Corning had a 1 point lead heading into the break. CCC used the intermission to regroup and poured it on the Royals in the 3rd and 4th quarter, scoring 23 points in both 10 minute periods, leading to a 65-46 victory.  Taking charge of the game offensively and on the glass for the Red Barons was freshman Kiara Buxton, who scored 22 points and raked in 13 boards. Taylor Sutryk was dialed in from deep, scoring 9 of her 13 points from beyond the arc, while Mackenzie Warner handed out 8 assists. This was a total team effort as all 14 players recorded a statistic for the team against the Royals.

The following day proved a tougher task for the Red Barons as they faced Region III foe, Columbia-Greene CC, and the two teams battled all forty minutes with Corning CC eventually falling by a score of 65-63. With 25 seconds left in the game and CCC down 2, Mackenzie Warner stole the ball and the Red Barons had a good look at the basket but could not knock down the shot. The Twins hauled in the defensive rebound and scored on the break to push the lead to 65-61. Hailey Stratton then drove baseline and dished to Kiara Buxton who finished the basket while getting fouled to close the gap to 2 points. She missed the free throw and no one could secure the rebound as time expired, which handed the Red Barons a hard-fought loss. Buxton led the way again with 22 points and 16 boards to complete back to back double-doubles, Taylor Sutryk provided a scoring punch as well with 17 points and 8 assists. The Corning CC women's basketball team ends the semester at 3-7 overall and returns to the hardwood on January 11th at Cayuga CC.
